Thornwell, which has served children across Florida, Georgia and South Carolina for over a century, is seeking staff to expand its community ministry to families across the three states.

We are currently seeking a Consultant for our Intensive In-Home Therapy Program, Building Families. This individual will be responsible for supervising staff in the Dorchester / Berkeley County region and will be required to provide in-person supervision, and home visit observations. The Consultant will be an employee of Thornwell, and will maintain office space at a host-church site in Moncks Corner, SC.

The position of Consultant is a salaried, full-time, exempt position that requires home visits with supportive phone calls. Excellent salary (DOE), comprehensive benefits package, and Phone/Mileage reimbursement provided. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with interviewing and hiring staff, pre-service and ongoing training, supervision and program administration/oversight, and developing/evaluating the program.

The position requires a Master’s Degree and experience supervising clinical and/or community based programs. Candidates must also be licensed in the state of South Carolina as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), LISW (Licensed Social Worker) or LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist).

Position Summary

The Consultant will implement a systematic approach to consultation and training services to help ensure the provision of quality services for clients through the use of established Thornwell, Teaching-Family Association (TFA) and Council on Accreditation (COA) standards. The Consultant will develop and maintain a diverse network of community and congregational relationships to ensure program development and sustainability.

Core Responsibilities

  • The Consultant will conduct consultation, supervision and training as scheduled using the standards established by TFA, Council on Accreditation (COA), and according to the policies and procedures of Thornwell Home for Children. The Consultant will utilize best practice techniques for supervision including a reflective supervision process.
  • The Consultant will assist Family Specialists to become certified with the TFA to include weekly staffing/consultation, in home observations, verbal and written feedback, evaluation coordination and completion of appropriate documentation.
  • The Consultant will collaborate with Director of Building Families Program in order to conduct periodic employee evaluations using a strength-based coaching approach to assess employee performance, address concerns and promote growth.
  • The Consultant will provide administrative oversight to Family Specialists which includes verifying and submitting monthly reports, mileage and check request, processing leave & training request, and monitoring credit use and budget expenditures.
  • The Consultant will support Family Specialists in documentation and service planning needs to include client invoicing, 3rd party billing summary, and documentation compliance.
  • The Consultant will assist with new hire interview process.
  • The Consultant will provide additional on-site pre-service and on-going training for Family Specialists. The Consultant will provide on-going training during the all staff Building Families meetings.
  • The Consultant will assist with the development and evaluation of the Building Families Program policies, procedures and curriculum.
  • The Consultant will oversee the referral process and assist Family Specialists with making decisions regarding level-of-care, geographical catchments area, and assessment/fit for Building Families.
  • The Consultant will be responsible for and/or coordinating contact and collaboration with congregations, community based service organizations, local schools, medical practices and mental health practitioners to develop a network of professionals available to refer families for services and provided on-going support to families.
  • The Consultant will create a culture of respect, trust, safety and professionalism.
  • When approved or assigned by the Director the Consultant will serve up to 2 families at a time in addition to their consultation duties.
  • The Consultant will participate in program development calls and coordinating the treatment team calls.

Working Conditions

The Consultant will work in an office setting provided by a local host church, or a home office as approved by the Director of Building Families. The Consultant may travel daily to provide services to families in a geographical area defined as approximately a 15 miles radius from their designated office site. The Consultant will travel weekly to complete observations of their assigned Family Specialists and to assist with on-site training, consultation and evaluation. The Consultant will travel using their own car and will be reimbursed at Thornwell’s defined standard rate. The Consultant will utilize their personal cell phone device and will be reimbursed at Thornwell’s defined standard rate. Limited overnight travel for staff meetings, observation/consultations and training is required. The Consultant will be required to use computers with the most frequent applications to include: Word Processing, Excel Spreadsheets, Power Point, Video Conferencing and Electronic Note taking system (Best Notes).

The Consultant will work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the families we serve. Most family sessions will be scheduled in the afternoon and early evening hours (2:00 pm – 7:30 pm). The Consultant will maintain office hours at their designated office site unless they are completing a home visit or a work related community event (referral visit, networking or church event). For Consultant’s located at a church host site – Building Families staff are expected to work from their host site on all business days (Monday through Friday) when the church office is open. If the host church is closed during a normal business day then the employee is authorized to work remotely from their home, or an alternate location in the community. Any remote work arrangement must be pre-approved by the employee’s immediate Supervisor.

Physical activity associated with the job will include sitting (travel & computer work) and ability to move around and engage in activities with the families and children. Activities could include: sitting on floor in home playing board games, tossing a ball outside, walking in a park setting, kicking a soccer ball. The Consultant will need to be able to work independently as well as together with the Building Families Team. The Consultant will provide reflective supervision and engage in treatment team processing.

Qualifications

The Consultant must be committed to positive changes in families through the implementation of the Teaching-Family Model and possess strong leadership and supervision skills; have the ability to organize, prioritize, and implement work activities independently; possess advanced technical writing skills; and desire to grow professionally. The Consultant must have experience supervising community based employees. This person must have a Master’s Degree and be licensed in the state where they reside. The Consultant must have a valid driver’s license in the state they reside.

  • Experience working with youth with emotional and behavioral challenges and their families, and demonstrated understanding and acceptance of wraparound principles and family-centered services.
  • Ability to engage in a reflective supervision model with capacity to listen carefully, demonstrate concern and empathy, promote reflection, observe and highlight the parent-child relationship, respect role boundaries, respond thoughtfully in emotionally intense interactions and understand, regulate and use one’s own feelings.
  • Ability to use strengths-based coaching and develop collaborative supervision plans when assessing staff member’s strengths, addressing concerns and promoting growth.
  • Possess strong organizational strategies to manage own work flow, and provide oversight and skill development support to staff in all aspects of job expectations.
  • Strong capacity to build positive relationships with community stakeholders and market the Building Families program to appropriate referral sources within the designated service area.
