Tony Cunningham’s three-year-old daughter, Ke’asia, is excited to go to school every morning.
“She loves it,” Cunningham said. “She knows all of her friends’ names. In the mornings I tell her she gets to see her friends at school, and she’s ready to go.”
The Early Head Start Difference
Ke’asia goes to Thornwell’s Early Head Start program. She’s an only child, and Cunningham can easily see the difference the program has made in his daughter.
“They teach her how to interact with other kids,” he said. “They’re teaching her how to be independent. It’s a wonderful program.”
Cunningham also likes how Thornwell’s Early Head Start program prepares his daughter for kindergarten; it’s not just a daycare program. On a typical day Ke’asia practices the alphabet and numbers, learns colors and makes arts and crafts.
“They’re always doing different activities,” Cunningham said. “And it’s not like the teachers are telling the kids stuff to do. The kids get in and do it.”
Learn Christian Values
In addition to the active learning that his daughter receives in the Early Head Start program, Cunningham says the values that his daughter learns also sets the program apart.
“Thornwell teaches kids the values that I teach my child at home,” he said. “They teach them good Christian values. They teach them how to love. They teach them how to get along, and they don’t see color. They just see each child as a child. And I love that.”
The Early Head Start program and the 4K program are two early childhood education programs offered at Thornwell. Both grant-supported programs are free to eligible families, and both are now enrolling.
